The Characters
In “When Harry Tries to Marry”, we are introduced to a large cast of Indian and Caucasian characters. The story revolves around Harry, an Indian-American man, and his fiancée, Harriet. Together, they must navigate their way through two cultures in order to create their own unique hybrid identity.
The characterizations in this novel are spot-on. We have the boisterous and lovable Aunties, the stern and traditional Grandfather, the doting and ever-supportive Mother, and the list goes on. Each character is so well-drawn that they could each have their own story. But it is the interactions between these individuals – both positive and negative – that make this novel so special.
It is clear that the author has a deep understanding of both cultures represented in the book. The result is a story that is funny, heartwarming, and thought-provoking all at the same time. If you are looking for a book that will make you laugh out loud one minute and tug at your heartstrings the next, then look no further than “When Harry Tries to Marry”.
Themes
When Harry Tries to Marry is a story about, well, Harry trying to get married. But it’s not just a simple love story. The movie explores a lot of different themes, including love, family, relationships, and culture.
One of the main themes of the movie is love. Harry is in love with a woman named Charlotte, but his family doesn’t approve of her. He has to choose between the woman he loves and his family. Another theme is family. Harry’s family is very important to him, but they don’t always see eye to eye. He has to learn to compromise and accept that not everyone is going to agree with him all the time.
Relationships are also a big theme in the movie. Harry has to deal with his parents’ relationship, his own relationship with Charlotte, and his relationships with his friends. He learns that relationships are hard work and that sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the people you care about.
Finally, culture is a major theme in When Harry Tries To Marry. Harry comes from a traditional Indian family, but Charlotte is American. Their cultural differences cause a lot of conflict throughout the movie. Harry has to learn to respect Charlotte’s culture and Charlotte has to learn to understand and respect Harry’s culture.
The Setting
The movie opens up in a small town in America, where the main character Harry is from. The town is your typical white picket fence type of place, with a church on every corner and people who know each other’s business. Harry has just graduated from college and is about to start working at his father’s company. He is bored with his life and wants to find something more.
The Writing
The Writing: 10/10
The story is told through the eyes of Harry, an Indian-American man, as he tries to navigate his way through an arranged marriage. The story is funny, heartwarming, and relatable, all at the same time. It’s one of those books that you just can’t put down.
The Ending
The ending was a bit of a disappointment though. It seemed like everything was leading up to this huge confrontation between Harry and his father, and then it just sort of fizzled out. I was also hoping that we would get to see more of Harry’s wife, but she was only in a few scenes.
Pros
When Harry Tries to Marry is a romantic comedy that follows the story of Harry (played by Sendhil Ramamurthy), an Indian-American man who is determined to marry a woman from his own culture.
The film does an amazing job of exploring the pressures that Harry faces from his traditional family to conform to their expectations, while also showing the love and support that they have for him. It is a heartwarming and funny movie that will leave you feeling good about life.
The cast is fantastic, with Ramamurthy leading the way as Harry. He is charming and funny, and completely believable as a man who is caught between two cultures. The rest of the cast is equally strong, including Anna George as Harry’s mother, who is hilarious and supportive, and Pooja Kumar as Harry’s girlfriend, who is smart and independent.
The script is well-written and full of humor, but it also deals with some serious issues in a respectful and thoughtful way. The film does a great job of exploring the differences between Indian and American cultures, and how those differences can lead to misunderstandings and conflict. But it also shows how love and understanding can overcome those differences.
This is a feel-good movie that will leave you laughing, crying, and cheering for the power of love.
Cons
The book When Harry Tries To Marry was incredibly eye-opening. I knew that arranged marriages still occurred in some cultures, but I had no idea that the practice was so common in India. I was also surprised to learn that many Indian women who are educated and have successful careers are still expected to marry men who their parents choose for them.
I found the characters to be very relatable and likable. I particularly liked Harry, who is an Indian-American man who is caught between two cultures. He is torn between his traditional Indian values and his desire for freedom and independence. I also liked his girlfriend, Ginny, who is an American woman who is struggling to accept Harry’s culture and values.
The only downside of this book is that it is very short. I would have liked it to be longer so that I could have gotten to know the characters better.
