Introduction

In the early 1960s, Walter Stackhouse (Patrick Wilson) is an architect living in New York. He is married to Clara (Jessica Biel), a beautiful woman who is pregnant with their first child. Walter is having an affair with Marian (Haley Bennett), a young woman who he met while working on a design project.

One night, while Clara is asleep, Walter goes to Marian’s apartment and kills her. He then stages the scene to make it look like a burglary gone wrong. The police investigate the case and eventually rule it as a homicide.

However, things begin to unravel for Walter when the detective assigned to the case, Lt.Conrad (Ed Norton), begins to suspect that he was involved in Marian’s death. As Conrad gets closer to the truth, Walter starts to crack under the pressure, which could have devastating consequences for him and his family.

What did I think of the movie?

I didn’t like it.

The Good

Critics Consensus: A Kind of Murder benefits enormously from a smart, twisty script and a gripping central performance from Patrick Wilson.

The Bad

If you love movie reviews that give nothing away, then don’t bother reading this one.

A Kind of Murder is a 2016 American crime thriller film directed by Andy Goddard and written by Sheldon Turner, based on the 1954 Patricia Highsmith novel The Blunderer. It stars Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, Haley Bennett, Vincent Kartheiser, Toby Jones, and Eddie Marsan.

The film follows Walter Stackhouse (Wilson), a successful architect married to the beautiful Clara (Biel). When Clara is found brutally murdered, all evidence points to Walter as the prime suspect. However, Walter begins to believe that the real killer may be closer to home than he thought.

A Kind of Murder had its world premiere at the 2016 Zurich Film Festival on October 2, 2016 and was released in theaters on December 16, 2016 by Magnolia Pictures.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 50% based on 51 reviews with an average rating of 5.8/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “A Kind of Murder shuffles along adequately as a suspenseful period piece – albeit one whose plotting ultimately feels disappointingly conventional.” On Metacritic the film has a score of 57 out of 100 based on 18 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.

The Ugly

The ugliest thing about “A Kind of Murder” is its complete and utter pointlessness. It’s a remake of a 1962 film noir that was itself based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, and it has nothing new or interesting to say. The story, such as it is, follows Walter Stackhouse (Patrick Wilson), an architect with a beautiful wife, Clara ( Jessica Biel), and a dark secret: He’s been fantasizing about murdering her.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to “A Kind of Murder”, the movie, final thoughts are conflicted. The production values are very high, the acting is good, and thedark cinematography and understated score give the film a chilly feeling that’s perfect for a winter’s night. But the plot is very convoluted, featuring too many red herrings and false leads, and in the end, it all feels a bit unsatisfying.

Would I Recommend It?

A Kind of Murder is not your typical who-done-it. The focus of the movie is not on the police investigating a crime, but on the mind of the killer. Walter Stackhouse (Patrick Wilson) is an architect in the 1950s who is unhappy in his marriage to Clara (Jessica Biel). He becomes obsessed with Stella Ardler (Haley Bennett), a woman he sees in a bar who resembles his late first wife. When Stella is found dead, Walter becomes the prime suspect.

The movie does a good job of portraying Walter’s mental state and how his obsession leads him down a path of self-destruction. The acting is excellent, and I particularly liked Patrick Wilson’s portrayal of a man struggling to keep his dark impulses in check. However, I found the ending to be abrupt and unsatisfying.

Would I recommend A Kind of Murder? If you’re looking for a different take on the traditional murder mystery, then yes, I would recommend it. But if you’re expecting a more conventional Hollywood thriller, you’ll probably be disappointed.
