It has been five years since Netflix first released the docu-series A Fall From Grace, and the case of Tyler Hoechlin is still one of the most talked about in recent memory. For those who are not familiar with the case, Tyler was sentenced to life in prison without parole after being convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Erin Corwin. The trial was highly publicized and many believed that Tyler did not receive a fair trial.

In 2020, Netflix released a follow up docu-series called A Fall From Grace: The Real Story. This series revisited the case and included new interviews with key players in the story. If you have not seen the original series or the follow up, here is what you need to know.

The Basics
Tyler Hoechlin was a Marine who was stationed at Twentynine Palms in Southern California. In 2013, he began an affair with his next door neighbor, Erin Corwin. Erin was married to a fellow Marine, Jonathan Corwin. Jonathan was deployed overseas and Erin was home alone with their young child.

During their affair, Tyler and Erin planned to run away together. However, before they could leave, Erin disappeared. Her body was later found at the bottom of a mining shaft in Joshua Tree National Park. Tyler was arrested and charged with her murder.

The Trial
Tyler’s trial lasted for two months and captured national attention. He was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The prosecution argued that Tyler killed Erin because he did not want to leave his wife and child for her. They also claimed that he was motivated by jealousy after finding out that Erin had been seeing other men while he was deployed.

The defense claimed that Erin’s death was an accident and that she fell into the mining shaft while hiking with Tyler in Joshua Tree National Park. They also argued that there was no evidence linking Tyler to her murder and that he had been mistreated by the police during their investigation.

The Plot
A Fall From Grace follows the story of Grace Waters, a successful lawyer whose world is turned upside down when she is accused of murdering her husband. The novel explores Grace’s journey as she tries to clear her name and find out who is really responsible for his death. Along the way, Grace discovers some dark secrets about her husband and her marriage that make her question everything she thought she knew. A Fall From Grace is a suspenseful and twisty read that will keep you guessing until the very end.

The Characters

The film centers on three characters. The first is Grace (played by Nicole Kidman), a woman who seems to have it all. She’s beautiful, successful, and has a loving family. However, Grace is hiding a dark secret: she’s an alcoholic.

The second character is her husband, Michael (played by Hugh Grant). He’s a successful businessman who loves his wife, but he’s struggling to deal with her alcoholism.

The third character is their daughter, Lily (played by Rooney Mara). She’s a teenage girl who’s trying to deal with her parents’ alcoholism and her own struggles with mental health.

A Fall From Grace is a powerful film that explores the impact of alcoholism on families. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s also ultimately hopeful.

The novel A Fall From Grace is a gritty tale of crime and disadvantage set in a small town in England. Themes such as poverty, violence, and alcoholism are explored through the lives of the characters as they try to survive in a harsh and unforgiving environment. Despite the bleakness of the subject matter, the author manages to find moments of hope and humanity amid the darkness, which makes for a compelling and thought-provoking read.

The Writing

Even though the book was written by a 13-year-old, the writing is actually quite good. It’s easy to read and understand, and it flows well. There are a few formatting issues and typos, but nothing that would make the book unreadable. Overall, I thought the writing was good considering the author’s age.

The ending

Warning: Spoilers for A Fall From Grace ahead!
The final scenes of A Fall From Grace see Grace (formerly Sara) in a shoot-out with the law. After killing one of the sheriff’s deputies, she’s shot and wounded herself. Escaping into the woods, she’s finally confronted by her estranged husband John (played by Michael Jai White).

John has been tracking Grace since she disappeared, and now he’s found her. He tells her that he knows she didn’t kill their daughter Allie, as she claimed in her confession. He also knows that she was framed for the crimes by corrupt law enforcement officials.

The two argue, and John accuses Grace of never really loved him or their daughter. Enraged, Grace shoots him dead. As she staggers away from the body, she’s surrounded by more deputies. She’s arrested and taken into custody as the screen fades to black.
